On the job
Split payment request by text
A split payment is two named amounts: a deposit now and a balance later, or two payers. Each amount gets a sentence. Each payer gets their own invoice.
Name each part of the split
Split payments become fights when one text contains two unspoken halves. If you want half now and half later, send a deposit invoice now and say the balance will follow. Do not send the full fee and ask them to “just pay half”. The invoice would still say they owe the full fee. If two people are paying, send two invoices, each with that person’s share and that person’s name. A group chat with one total is how a couple each assumes the other has paid. Say the amount this message is asking for, and say what it is not asking for.
One invoice per demand
Deposit and balance are two invoices, or the balance invoice explicitly excludes the deposit.
One payer per invoice
Shares get their own links.
Say the number this text wants
Not the project total, unless this text is for the project total.
Do not ask for half of an invoice that shows the full debt
Change the invoice to the amount you are actually requesting.
What to put on this invoice
- A named amount for this message
- What the other part is, and when
- Separate invoices for separate payers
- No group-chat ambiguity
Questions about this job
Can I take two cards against one invoice?
If both people are paying one bill, one invoice can still be right, and your payment method has to support it. The text should say who is responsible. If each person owes a share contractually, split the invoices.
What about three instalments?
Three invoices, or one invoice that describes an agreed schedule and asks only for what is due now. Do not invent instalments in the text that the invoice does not show.
What if they already paid the deposit in cash?
The balance text says the deposit was received. The balance invoice does not list it as outstanding.
Say the amount this message is for, and say the amount it is not for. That is the whole split.
